How Often Should You Have Your House Professionally Cleaned?

There is no universal right answer, but there is a right answer for your household, and it is more predictable than it looks. It comes down to four things: how many people and animals live in the home, how much of the day the home is actually occupied, how many bathrooms it has, and how much you are prepared to do between visits. What actually drives the answer

Occupancy, not house size

A four-bedroom house occupied by two people who commute out all week genuinely needs less frequent cleaning than a three-bedroom house with two children at home. Dirt is generated by use, not by floor area. If your household is out from early morning to evening — as most are in Ascot, Sunningdale and Virginia Water, where the Waterloo commute empties houses for the day — fortnightly usually holds up perfectly well.

Pets and children

Both push you towards weekly, and for different reasons. Pets shed continuously and track mud and grit in daily, which is a floors-and-soft-furnishings problem. Children generate surface and bathroom work. A household with both is the clearest case for weekly cleaning there is.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are the fastest-degrading rooms in any home and the most labour-intensive to put right. Berkshire is a hard-water area, so limescale re-establishes on screens, taps and tiles quickly. Three or more bathrooms is a strong argument for weekly even in a quiet household — a fortnight of limescale takes materially longer to remove than a week of it, which is exactly why the fortnightly visit is longer.

The most honest question of the four. A household that wipes surfaces, keeps on top of the kitchen and does not let bathrooms go can hold a fortnightly rhythm easily. A household that does nothing between visits should book weekly, because a fortnightly visit will spend its time catching up rather than cleaning properly, and you will conclude — wrongly — that the cleaner is not very good.

How often should you deep clean?

Once or twice a year for most homes, on top of your regular schedule. A deep clean reaches what routine cleaning never has time for — inside the oven and appliances, behind and beneath furniture, descaled bathrooms, skirting, door tops, extractors, vents and light fittings.

The best time locally is the end of winter. Hallways and stairs have taken months of wet-weather traffic, limescale has built up quietly, and a spring reset gives the regular schedule a clean baseline to maintain for the rest of the year. Deep cleaning and regular cleaning are complements, not alternatives. Deep cleans reset; regular visits stop the reset being needed again. Doing only deep cleans is expensive; doing only regular cleans on a property that never got a reset means your cleaner is permanently fighting accumulated soil.

How often should carpets be cleaned?

For most homes, high-traffic areas — hallways, stairs, landings and main living rooms — benefit from professional extraction annually, with bedrooms and lightly-used rooms every 18 months to two years. Splitting it that way is much better value than cleaning the whole house less often, because the wear and soiling are not evenly distributed.

Some households should be at the more frequent end regardless. Pet owners and allergy sufferers, obviously — but also households near heath and parkland. It is cheaper than the alternative, which is paying for several regular visits that overrun while the cleaner works through accumulated build-up — and it means the standard you are paying to maintain is a standard the home has actually reached.
