The Complete End of Tenancy Cleaning Checklist (Room by Room)

An end of tenancy clean is judged against an inventory check-out, not a general impression of tidiness. The clerk works methodically, room by room, against a list. If you clean to the same list, you remove almost every reason a deposit deduction gets raised. Here is that list — the one a professional clean works to.

Tip: the single biggest deposit risk is the oven. It is the most commonly flagged item at check-out and the most time-consuming to do properly. If you do nothing else on this list yourself, get the oven professionally degreased.

Kitchen

  • Oven fully degreased — interior, racks, door glass (inside the double glazing where accessible), trays
  • Hob, extractor hood and filter degreased; splashback cleaned
  • Inside and outside of all cupboards and drawers, including handles
  • Fridge/freezer defrosted, emptied and cleaned inside and out (if remaining)
  • Washing machine and dishwasher — drum, door seal, detergent drawer and filter
  • Sink and taps descaled and polished; plughole clear
  • Worktops, tiles and grout cleaned; floor washed including edges and behind appliances

Bathrooms and en-suites

  • Toilet descaled and sanitised inside, outside, base and behind
  • Bath, shower, screen and tiles descaled; grout cleaned; mould spotted and treated
  • Taps, shower head and fittings descaled and polished
  • Sink, vanity and mirror cleaned; extractor fan dusted
  • Floor washed including behind the toilet and along edges

Bedrooms, living and all other rooms

  • Full dusting — including tops of doors, frames, picture rails and light fittings
  • Skirting boards, switches, sockets and radiators cleaned
  • Internal windows, sills and any internal glass cleaned
  • Wardrobes and built-in storage cleaned inside
  • Cobwebs removed; marks spot-cleaned on walls and woodwork
  • Carpets vacuumed; hard floors mopped (professional carpet cleaning often required separately)

Hallways, stairs and shared areas

  • Bannisters, spindles and handrails cleaned
  • Stairs vacuumed thoroughly including edges and risers
  • Front and internal doors, frames and door furniture cleaned
  • Meter cupboards and storage areas tidied and dusted

Final walk-through (do this last)

  1. Compare the property against your original inventory and check-in photos.
  2. Re-check the oven, bathroom limescale and skirting — the three most-flagged areas.
  3. Take date-stamped photos of every room once cleaned, as your evidence.
  4. Remove all rubbish and personal items — leftover belongings can trigger a removal charge.
  5. Confirm carpet cleaning is done if your tenancy requires it.
